CoolSculpting – scientifically known as cryolipolysis – is essentially a procedure to freeze (and thereby kill), fat cells. Here’s how the FDA-approved treatment works: An applicator applies suction to the area you want to target. The applicator then applies carefully regulated cooling plates to bring fat cells down to a temperature at which they are irreversibly damaged. For most areas, the process takes about 35 minutes. After the deep-freeze damage to the fat cells, they die and are eliminated by the body. Most people start to see results after a few weeks with the final effects revealed in three months.
How CoolSculpting Works
With Coolsculpting, it is now possible to reduce stubborn fat pockets and improve body contours without surgery, scars or downtime. Ideal candidates for Coolsculpting are those who are relatively fit, are close to their ideal body weight but have some modest-size fat bulges that are not easily reduced through diet and exercise. Working out and watching your weight is an important part of staying fit, but you can’t control where fat is deposited on your body when you gain weight. Coolsculpting is a spot reduction procedure, which can eliminate those areas with stubborn fat, helping to reshape your body by freezing unwanted fatty deposits beneath the skin (think love handles and belly fat).
Losing weight vs losing fat
Reducing fat is not the same as losing weight. It’s all about what happens to fat CELLS. The number of fat cells in our bodies typically becomes a fixed number sometime in our teenage years. Losing or gaining weight generally does not increase or decrease the number of fat cells. Instead, it changes the size of fat cells. When we lose weight, we don’t actually lose fat cells, the fat cells that we already have simply shrink. Same principal applies to gaining weight, we’re just making the fat cells we already have larger.
Losing weight makes fat cells smaller but does not make fat cells go away.
Most people can identify with losing weight but still having that left over pocket of fat. This could be because your body has more fat cells in that particular area and even when they shrink, you still have a bulge. With Coolsculpting the fat cells are killed and eliminated from the body. *
We all have stubborn areas of fat that just won’t respond to time at the gym, and don’t even respond as much as we wish to weight loss. Working out and watching your weight is an important part of staying fit, but you can’t control where on your body your fat is deposited when you gain weight, or from where on your body it leaves when you lose weight. After dieting and weight loss, fat cells get smaller but the number of fat cells stays the same. When weight is gained, fat cells get bigger. CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure actually reduces the number of fat cells in treated areas by about 20% to 25%. These fat cells are naturally processed and eliminated, so they won’t migrate to another area of your body. And, unlike what happens with other procedures, there’s no change to fat cells in untreated areas.
